MY APPROACH

Landscape with Animals

My approach blends person-centred counselling skills with an existential worldview.  Simply put, this means I provide an empathic, unbiased space where you are respected and cared for as we explore your world.  I am interested in how wider social, and cultural issues (and expectations) can affect us - essentially, what it means for you to be alive, in this world, today.

I endeavour to create an atmosphere of ease and openness, offering a warm, patient and caring manner through which a safe and secure environment is established.  I offer an authentic presence, focusing on being 'real', transparent and fully present in the session, rather than hiding behind a professional façade.

I'll work with you using sensitive inquiry, authentic involvement and a desire to understand the challenges or blocks in your life - essentially what brought you to therapy (this isn't always obvious).  I am receptive to seeing people beyond how they outwardly may appear - and aware that they may be suffering in ways which aren't evident at all.

I believe the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client is a key determinant in the successful outcomes of therapy.  Because of this belief, I spend time, commitment and effort developing that relationship, working collaboratively with you throughout.  This type of supported, deep exploration, with someone uninvolved in your life, can be relieving and allow you to think more strategically about your life.

It is hard to know at the beginning how 'long' therapy will take.  An initial session or two should be enough for you to know whether I am the right person for you and, after that, therapy can last a number of weeks, months or sometimes much longer.
